Spiritual Disciplines is what can make you a good Follower of Christ

TEXT: Matthew 26:40-44

One of the major control that every child of God must attain is control over sleep. Whoever has power of control over sleep and uses his time judiciously in the place of prayer will do well in the things of the spirit.

Matthew 26:40 “And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 26:42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. 26:43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. 26:44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.”

The Lord Jesus took Peter, James and John to the mount of oliveth for prayer but these disciples had no power of discipline over their sleep. Many of us illusorily believe that it is because have not received the Holy Spirit… Many of us have received the Holy Spirit but find it difficult to watch in prayer for one hour. Is it because we are not filled with the Holy Spirit?

One can be filled with the Holy Spirit and yet intentionally chooses to be lazy in prayer perhaps as a result of one’s ignorance of the spirit do’s and don’t that will encourage sobriety, gravity, and temperance needed to find pleasure in spiritual activities. It takes the spiritual discipline of controlled sleep to be able to watch and pray in preparation for the inevitable daily temptation.

Jesus Christ already knew His time of departure was fast approaching and He knew the tendency for Him to be tempted to say no to death of the cross, if he didn’t need He therefore went to oliveth with three of His disciples to teach us the need for us to learn how to pray our ways out of temptation. It also teaches that it takes overcoming temptation to fulfil destiny and takes prayer to overcome temptation. The Bibles says, …walk in the spirit and ye shall not sin Gal 5:16. Sin destroys destiny. It takes spiritual discipline to walk in the spirit. It takes keeping the body under walk in the spirit. To keep the body under means to control one’s sleep whenever one wants to pray.

NOTE: One of the reasons why many people have not experienced the touch of God is because we lack spiritual discipline.

PROPHETIC DECLARATION: Lord Jesus, please give the grace to be disciplined in Jesus

“If anyone thinks that he is religious and does not bridle his tongue, but instead deceives himself, his religion is worthless”

The door to operating in this life is our mouth. Either the spiritual or the physical, words are very important in building relationships and controlling the affairs of life. Therefore, Christianity also addresses its use.

Today’s bible text focuses on another aspect of true religion, which is the use of your tongue. Apostle James said “If you don’t know how to control your tongue, your religion is false”. It is important that we learn how to be in charge of this tongue.

The tongue itself is not the issue, but what is going on inside of us is expressed through the tongue, thus we need to learn how to think right before we can speak right.

Colossians 4:6 “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone.”

This is how we are expected to live the Christian life. The speech of a believer must be filled with grace, edifying the hearers.

No matter what your husband or wife does, be in charge of your tongue and speak grace. No matter what your friend or business partner does, be in charge of your tongue, and let your speech edify.

You blame the devil for your broken home, and isolated lifestyle, but your big mouth was the instrument he used to break things down. You are quick to curse, and you want things to be good. It doesn’t work like that.

So, the word of the Lord has come today, to point you to the weakness that the enemy is using to tie you down, *”Your big mouth”*. Therefore, bridle it by the grace that is supplied by the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

Let the love and the grace of Christ spew out of your tongue always, be gentle at speech and be in charge of your emotions, then you would realise that life is not always difficult.
