The Son of Abraham
TEXT: Genesis 21:15-20
INTRODUCTION: Abrahamic blessing is extended to every child of God. We have legal spiritual birthright to claim this blessing because we belong to God and He loves us.
Genesis 21:15 “And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. 21:16 And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. 21:17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. 21:18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. 21:19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink. 21:20 And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.”
Abraham as instructed by God sent Hagar and Ishmael away and they wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba, where there was no water and Ishmael was thirsty. They both cried to God but God heard only the child…
The bible says and “…God heard the voice of the lad” Genesis 21:17a. God told Hagar, “I will make him a great nation”, God didn’t respond to the cry of Hagar but the cry of the lad because it was the voice of the lad that God heard. God knew what Ishmael wanted, and He created a supernatural water where there was no water because of Ismael that he might drink water and be strengthened. The bible says: “…and God was with the lad and he grew…” Genesis 21:20.
It is obvious from the text that immediately the child takes the water, the bible says God was with Him. Moreover, the text makes it clear that God created a supernatural water in the wilderness for Hagar to get water for Ishmael because God had to open her eyes to see the water. That means the water was not ordinary because as soon as he drank the water, the bible says he was strengthened and God was with him. Water represents the Holy Spirit.
NOTE: The only thing that qualifies man to be a child of Abraham is to believe in who God has sent to come and show us the way and that we may worship God in Spirit and truth John 14:6, John 4:23-24.
1) Worship the Almighty
