TEXT: 1John 3:2-6
INTRODUCTION: The mark of earnest hope for the second coming of the Lord is to be holy. It is to purify oneself through a constant reading of God’s word and prayer. We purify ourselves by obeying the offered Spirit that is in us, leading us in righteousness.
1 John 3:2 “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.”
If the reason for Jesus Christ’s death is to take away our sins, then, sin is bad and ungodly. Therefore, there is no need for repeated emphasis on the need to flee sin if we love Jesus Christ and want to appreciate His sacrifice of love towards us. John 15:13.
Apart from Christ’s purification, there is a need for an individual purification. The bible says:
John 15:3 “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.”
The word of God cleanses from all forms of impurity of the heart. For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. God must be Holy for Him to send Jesus Christ to come and die because of our sin. His purpose was to forgive sin by shedding His blood. Accepting Jesus therefore is not restricted to confessing and believing but most pivotally stop sinning. We love Jesus if we stop sin. Self purification is a willing and daily conscious decision to abstain from every appearance of evil till the Lord comes. This exactly is an indication of our love for Him and faith of the hope of His return. Our strong undivided hope of His return lies in our holiness. If He is Holy, then we must…
Apart from the cleansing word of God, the blood of Jesus cleanses from all sins only if we CONFESS our sins with the intention of not returning to them.( genuine repentance) 1John 1:9. The blood that Jesus Christ sprinkled on the cross was mainly to purify us from all our dead works. We have roles to play. We must always by faith make effort to ensure that our hearts are pure for it is written that only the pure in heart shall see God. Matthew 5:8. We must constantly plead the blood of Jesus and pray. We must study to cleanse ourselves and act what we learn. We must also learn to discipline ourselves.
*NOTE:* God has played His own role by offering His only Son. Jesus has played His role by obeying the Father. We must also play our role by obeying the Spirit of Christ offered for us and that is in us leading us in righteousness.
